About the artist:

Joël Burger is a French painter. He was born in 1953 in the Champagne region and currently lives in a small village on the shore of lake annecy, in the french Alps. He draws inspiration from Zao Wou-Ki, Turner, and fauvist painters from the beginning of the last century, like Matisse or Bonnard. Other influences include abstract painters, such as Nicolas de Staël. His paintings embody the spirit of nature and capture the vibrant constitution of its elements.

From a very young age, he showed an innate talent for drawing and painting. When he turned 17, he enrolled in “Les Beaux-Arts”, in Grenoble. His first subjects were drawn from his experiences across the globe, including India, Nepal, Latin America, and North Africa. In parallel to his life as an artist, he pursued a dentist career and worked for forty years in this field. Now that he is retired, he can finally dive back into his first life passion : art.

Artist statement

In my late twenties, I decided to travel and settle in a small village, on the shores of Lake Annecy. Since then, I have drawn inspiration from the land, the water, the rocks, the deep forests and the mountain peaks.

My love for painting began during childhood when I first discovered and was impressed by reproductions of Claude Monet’s paintings, and later, by the work of Pierre Bonnard, William Turner and Nicolas de Stael. Ten years ago, I discovered the paintings of Zao Wou-Ki, whose brush I found expressive, powerful and vigorous.

The exposure to his distinctive aesthetic led me to develop a different style of painting, thus explore different media and techniques, and combine them.

I use acrylic with brushes to obtain transparency and softness, and oil painting and knives to give strength to my landscapes. This provided me with different approaches toward abstracting nature and helped me in my goal of representing pure form.

My perpetual artistic research aims at finding a form of calm through painting and at capturing a fleeting version of the natural world.
