My artistic work is fundamentally rooted in a profound appreciation for beauty and my personal interpretation of this subjective concept. It is on the island of Menorca that I discover my existential and artistic path. The predominant theme of my creations draws inspiration from the vibrant blue of the Menorcan sea. This hue permeates everything around me, evoking a deep sense of joy and vitality; I can perceive and feel its energy in the water, the sky, and in all that surrounds me, compelling me to capture it on canvas. I am particularly interested in exploring the artistic representation of water and sky; both elements possess the remarkable ability to reflect light in a unique and enchanting manner. This ethereal quality captivates me and inspires me to produce works that, through color, materials—whether acrylic or oil on canvas or wood—and form, convey the powerful essence of nature and life, harmoniously balanced with their unique transparency and delicacy. My aspiration is for viewers of my art to experience a special energy when they engage with my paintings, transcending the subject matter or the technique employed; I hope they can feel the same force and joy of life that I experience while creating them.
Carmen Montilla Castillo was born in Ibi (Alicante), Spain, in 1967. At a young age, she moved with her family to Ronda (Málaga), where she lived until she began her university studies. She enrolled in the Faculty of Fine Arts in Granada and later relocated to Seville to continue her education, earning her degree in Fine Arts with a specialization in Painting from the University of Seville in 1991. Subsequently, she moved to Madrid, where in 2001 she obtained the DEA (Diploma of Advanced Studies) in Modern Art History from the Complutense University of Madrid as part of the doctoral program in Theory and Practice: Modern and Ancient Age at the Faculty of Art History. Throughout her career, she has completed special commissions, including a mural painting in Los Vosgos (France) for a private collection, and has participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions across various European cities. Her work is included in private collections in Germany, France, Italy, and Spain. She has developed her artistic practice between Madrid, Strasbourg, and Menorca. In 2021, she established her residence on the Balearic island, where she discovered her greatest source of inspiration in the exceptional blue of its waters. Over time, her work has absorbed various artistic movements, both in technique and theme; she has researched and experimented with different materials, textures, supports, and stylistic techniques, particularly in her color palette. Currently, her work occupies a space between the abstract and the figurative, creating compositions that evoke recognizable elements emerging from an atmosphere dominated by the power of color and form.
